How to Prevent Heat-Related Illness
Heat stroke is the most serious heat-related illness. It occurs when the body loses its ability to control its own temperature.
Symptoms may include:
- Very high body temperature
- Confusion
- Slurred speech
- Hot, dry skin or excessive sweating
- Seizures
- Loss of consciousness
It is important to take immediate action if a heat stroke occurs, as it can be fatal. Get the person out of the sun – preferably in an air-conditioned room – and call 911. Provide cold water to drink, soak his or her clothing with water, and keep the surrounding air circulating. Other early warning signs of heat-related illness include cramps and a heat rash. If you or someone you know is showing signs of a heat-related illness, seek medical attention immediately.
